"Elysia" was a very slow project. Hand knitted copper wire only cooperates if you negotiate a peace treaty with it; there is no tolerance for rough handling or trying to rush things. The wire must be kept unkinked when coming off the spool. I started this on the normal set of four double ended knitting needles and ended up using twelve normal knitting needles that had been ground on each end to act as double ended. The final rows each took two hours to knit around. The piece has a wonderful organic life and the light, when it is struck by spotlight or sunshine, makes the stitches glimmer and shine. Wonderful shadows are cast by the knitted mesh if the lighting angle is correct. "Elysia" references the glorious rippled sea slugs such as those illustrated here: Elysia.
